Dune (2020) – A Potential New Big Sci-Fi Franchise

Dune, one man walking

A new film adaptation of Frank Herbert’s 1965 SciFi epic Dune is on the way. Denis Villeneuve will direct the movie. He has already produced some notable films such as Arrival and Blade Runner 2049

The first photos have already arrived. Vanity Fair published these early photos. The first photo reveals the first official look at Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides of House Atreides, on the planet Caladan, where his house stands.
Above him can be seen transport ships descending on the planet to take the ruling Atreides family to their new home.

Plot

Like the original, Dune (2020) will revolve around ”the spice” that was the most significant resource of the time. It was a drug called “melange,” also known as “the spice” produced by sandworms larvae. Spice has the ability to expand the mind, and one of its greatest values is that it enables interplanetary travel. The only place where “the spice” is found is the desert planet Arrakis. That planet is also home to giant sandworms.

The immensity of the first Dune novel is something that has made it so hard to adapt to filmmakers. And trying to put it all into one film would not give creatives the space for all Dune topics and messages they need to thrive.
While Villeneuve has previously stated that it was his hope to make Dune into more than one single film, Warner Bros. has only now confirmed that his hopes are reality.
Considering the scope and complexity of the first Dune novel, which packs so much history, detail, and information, this decision makes a lot of sense.

Previous project

Based on this Herbert novel, one movie has already been made, which is considered a “thrash” of science fiction. It was directed by David Lynch in 1984, with lead roles being interpreted by Kyle McLachlan, Virginia Madsen, Sting, and others. The version that arrived in theaters was so different from what Lynch had imagined that he publicly fenced in from a movie that earned less than it cost.
Also, Chilean-French filmmaker and artist Alejandro Jodorowsky had his own vision of this piece, which was never filmed. A remarkable documentary on “Jodorowsky’s Dune” was also made. It’s about this major but not realized project.

Everyone who watched the Lynch movie knows that it’s a thankless task. But who knows, maybe this new movie adaptation succeeds where the previous one didn’t find the best solutions.
We must point out that despite the flaws of the original Dune, we are very enthusiastic about the new movie. This is because the cult status of Dune is undeniable to this day.
However, given the scale and complexity of the story, this has the potential to grow into an exciting franchise that would bring great refreshment to the world of science fiction.

Initially, Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures announced the first Dune movie for December 18, 2020. Still, now they have moved the premiere to October 1, 2021.
